Deva Khalsa and Sat Guru Kaur

Healing Power of Gong and Mantra

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

'Healing Power of Gong and Mantra' begins with light yoga (suitable for anybody). Then we move into deep relaxation with two beautiful symphonic gongs. The gong is a reinforced vibration that impacts the entire body, releasing stress, unwinding nerves, and bringing the mind to total calm. You'll experience what the yogis say about the human body—that it is a wonderful musical instrument constructed with meridians that allow healing and energy to cascade into the body like a waterfall.

After the gong we use primal sounds (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. As you vibrate a particular combination of sounds, you tune into a higher level of intelligence and consciousness.

Facilitators:
Deva Khalsa is a 25-year veteran of playing the gong and teaching Kundalini Yoga. She is also an Ayurvedic health practitioner.
Sat Guru Kaur is a licensed educator, musician, and Level 2 Certified Kundalini Yoga teacher. She has been teaching sound healing with the gong since 2007.

Abby Foster

Curvy Yoga: a class series

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

Want a yoga body? Hooray! You already have one. You have a body, so you can do yoga. Curvy Yoga is about making our yoga practice work for us—with the bodies we have, not the bodies we used to have or we wish we had. Curvy Yoga is about embracing and celebrating ourselves, body, mind, and spirit.

This class series will introduce accessible, alignment-based yoga postures and muscle actions to support them. The class will progress week to week—beginning with the basic building blocks of alignment-based yoga practice and moving toward more complex postures. We will also practice relaxation and breath work to relieve stress and build body awareness.

After each class, students will be emailed practice notes, to help them practice effectively at home and integrate yoga into their daily lives (because only feeling good about ourselves for an hour a week is not enough!)

The class will be led by Abby Foster (RYT200), a specialist in adaptive and accessible yoga. Abby has been teaching yoga for seven years and has been  a certified Curvy Yoga instructor since 2013. She teaches body-positive yoga and adaptive chair yoga for students with chronic health conditions at High Desert Yoga.

Swati Chanchani

Iyengar Yoga Intensive

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Ave NE

In this intensive workshop Swati will use props, modify individual asanas, design dynamic sequences, and integrate asana and pranayama practice with the adoption of other components of the eight fold path of ashtanga yoga and its sister science, Ayurveda.

Swati Chanchani, and her husband Rajiv are founders-directors of the Yog-Ganga Centre in India. They began studying yoga in 1975 with Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. In the 1990s, they periodically advised the Indian government,  including the conceptualization of the international yoga week at Rishikesh, India.

Since the opening of the Dehradun campus of the Yog-Ganga Centre in 2001, Swati and Rajivhave been designing and teaching a remarkable series of yoga intensives. In these intensives they have been tracing the roots of yoga in mythology, legend, and history, and including many stories and tales bringing out the quality of and inspiration for postures. They stress the links of moral and ethical values implicit in the practice of yoga, including nonviolence, truthfulness, and contentment.

Swati and Rajiv have also been continuously promoting and refining Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar’s skillful and pioneering adjustment of asanas to improve the health of individuals irrespective of their age and condition.

In the Spirits of the Body: Organ Health & 5-Element Harmony

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Ave NE

This is the second workshop in a series which constitutes a 5-month MogaDao 5-Element Yoga and MogaDao Qigong practice semester. The goal of this workshop series is to bring the medicine, psychospirituality, and mythopoetics of MogaDao to a robust and sincere yoga practice community in Albuquerque—not so much for an “event” but rather for the purposes of a profound education and introduction to the MogaDao practice tradition.

Each 3-hour workshop will focus on an Element of MogaDao 5-Element Theory and a corresponding organ within the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Half of the class will be focused on the yoga asanas that relate to the Element and Organ (for instance we’ll begin with the Liver and Wood), and half the class will be focused on the MogaDao Qigong forms that sustain, nourish, and inform the Organ and Element.

IN THE SPIRITS OF THE BODY is both an introductory MogaDao Yoga and MogaDao Qigong class, and a study in MogaDao theory in general. (All levels of yoga practitioners are welcome, and no experience in qigong is necessary.) One need not take all of the workshops, but of course they represent a complete system, and as such the complete course is advisable.

Yoga for Your Pelvic Floor: Anatomy, Asana, Healing, and Self Love

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

What is your relationship with your pelvic floor? How does this special area reflect, and affect, what's happening in the rest of the body, the mind, the emotions?  “ Pelvic floor” refers to the dynamic layers of muscle which span the inner pelvis. In this afternoon workshop we will explore pelvic anatomy, posture, pelvic breath, and yoga poses and self care techniques to increase health, wellness, and healing.

When our pelvic floor area isn’t able to be both strong and relaxed, mild to serious health issues such as pelvic pain, digestive trouble, infertility, urge incontinence, stress incontinence, and/ or prolapse can develop. Pop culture would have us believe that most women are too loose, (when that’s often not true!) and that it’s inappropriate for men to want to learn about their pelvic floor. Many people have too much gripping, and because of that tightness, the pelvic muscles are weak. Or the muscles are lax and need tone... or, a combination of both! When trying to do Kegels people end up constricting the urethra, sometimes doing more harm than good. Mula Bandha is a hot topic, but often misunderstood. Let's bring the light of awareness to the inner pelvis, and give this area the loving care it needs.

This hands-on workshop will help you learn to sense the 3 layers of muscle that make up your unique pelvic floor. Then, by exploring specific actions and structural alignment through yoga poses and breath work, you will learn what practices will best support you. Discover ways to optimize pelvic health, including good circulation, movement, relaxation, and stability.

For all genders and levels.  Recommended for yoga teachers, teacher trainees, health care providers, and anyone with a pelvic floor! Workshop counts towards Yoga Alliance CEUS.

Avery Janeczek Kalapa, RYT500,  holds special certification in Yoga for the Pelvic Floor with Leslie Howard, as well as Prenatal Yoga. She is a committed, versatile teacher, who approaches this in-depth work with reverence, precision, and joy.

Angela Farmer

Reaching Down To Open Up: A Yoga Immersion

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

In this workshop I shall introduce a process of meeting tight, forgotten, painful, or simply uncomfortable places in your body with curiosity and a willingness to listen to their stories. With patience enough to give the body time and support to release and unwind back into spaciousness, we are returned to a sense of freedom and well-being. Only then are we ready to explore ‘empowerment’ in a meaningful way, discover our amazing potential to ‘stand our ground,’ speak our truth, and live authentically.

We shall then focus on the stability of ‘roots’ and their directions beyond the physical body, enabling us to be more grounded yet flexible in difficult situations. Then, by opening up inner space and returning to the ‘back-body,’ we gain power to remain true to ourselves, compassionate but less easily caught into other's ‘stories.’ Finally, relating to our surroundings in more subtle ways, we may develop a fluid and free-flowing connection with life around us and discover the amazing diversity and wealth of alternate nostril breathing without using hands/fingers to control the breath!

Please do not expect a traditional yoga ‘workout.’ The focus is not on asana although asanas may evolve or even be a starting point for this deep inner journey of self-discovery.

It is essential to attend all three days to gain a taste of this process.

About Angela Farmer

My earliest yoga experiences were during World War 2. No father around and mother always busy, I climbed to the top of a fir tree in our English garden and looked out over the valley below as the tree swayed from side to side in the wind. Hanging upside down from its branches I felt the joy of being alive in this body!

Years of sitting at desks in school, and three hours a day stuffed into a crowded smoke-filled train to get there and back, eventually ruined my circulation. Disastrous surgeries followed and took away my joy.

Finally, in 1966 when Iyengar and yoga came to London, I recognized the challenge, the work, the hope of a return to wholeness. Soon I was touring and teaching in Europe and the USA, giving workshops in the main big cities. Victor van Kooten and I were the first visiting Iyengar teachers in America at that time, training many now well-established American teachers. Three long trips to India furthered my practice, and also led me to meet many saints and yogis in whose presence new depths and understanding finally re-opened the doors to the joy I had lost so young.

Now, I am less concerned with form, technique, perfection, and presentation, than with the simple art of becoming present with undoing, releasing, and opening, as breathing takes over to reveal the beauty, power, and innate joy of life.

Infant Massage and Self-Care for Moms

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

Infant massage is a wonderful way to bond with your baby, but it also does wonders for your baby's brain and nervous system, circulatory and immune systems, sensory integration, and visual acuity. Infant massage can improve your baby's sleep and even counteract the effects of postpartum depression. We'll incorporate both ayurvedic and traditional western massage techniques and movement for your baby. We will also discuss and practice self-care techniques for moms: including yoga, diet, massage, and daily routine.

Shana began practicing yoga as a teenager and has enjoyed its physical and mental benefits ever since. She relishes the opportunity to teach specialty classes so that people of all ages and levels can experience yoga, with a specific interest in transitional times of life such as prenatal, postpartum, and the teen years.  She especially looks forward to helping parents, partners, and whole families find ways to share their time, attention, and the joy of yoga with each other. Shana is registered with Yoga Alliance as a 500-RYT and RPYT.

Asana: Outer Body, Inner Body, Subtle Body

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

Yogasana can be experienced in various ways. It can be experienced in the outer body by our awareness of the muscles and bones. This is a necessary foundation as it provides a structure for the organs and breath of the inner body. As the outer body becomes more organized, the consciousness can then begin to reference the alignment of the outer body from the organs and breath. As the outer and inner bodies become more harmonized, we can begin to attune to the asana as a subtle lattice of lines of force.  In this workshop, we will explore asana from the outer body through the inner body to the subtle body.

Kim has studied and taught Hatha Yoga for more than four decades. His lifelong passion for mystical truth led him to become ordained as a swami of the Temple of Kriya in Chicago. He was elevated to the position of Maha Swami in the Kriya lineage, enabling him to ordain others as swamis. Kim was director of the Temple’s Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Program before moving to New Mexico, where he continues to lead High Desert Yoga’s Teacher Training Program. Kim is recognized by many well-known yoga instructors both as a “master of his art” in personal practice and as a true “teacher’s teacher,” one with the ability to communicate the timeless truths of yoga on many levels to fellow instructors in a way that enables them to pass this wisdom on to their own students. He is registered with Yoga Alliance as E-RYT 500.

Introduction to Ayurveda

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Ave NE

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term meaning “the knowledge of life” related to life as a state of balance between the body, mind, and consciousness. The two goals of Ayurveda are to keep the body in a state of health and free from disease and to show us how to use health on the path to enlightenment.

Ayurveda is considered the healing side of yoga. Likewise, yoga is the spiritual side of Ayurveda. Both Ayurveda and yoga strive to help a person reconnect to their true nature through direct experience. Together they encompass a complete approach to wellness of the body, mind, and spirit.

According to Ayurveda, we create and recreate our state of health each day based upon how we interact with the world, in terms of our beliefs, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings, which then ultimately determine our actions.

This workshop will cover the basics of this 5000 year old science. You will learn about the doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha and how these manifest in your life. You will leave with greater understanding as well as tips and tools to begin living an Ayurvedic lifestyle.

Meditation and Breath

HIgh Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Ave NE

Have you tried to meditate and find that it is an exercise in thinking? Meditation is a practice beyond mind and thought, yet we need mind-quieting and mind-concentrating techniques, including pranayama (breathing exercises), to take us to a place beyond the field of mind. Want to come? This is a great class for newcomers to the practice, those seeking to renew their relationship with meditation, and newer yoga teachers and teacher trainees.

Jill Giri Palmer, E-RYT 500, has taught yoga in New Mexico, Hawaii, and India. She has studied and practiced yoga asana, yoga philosophy, meditation and pranayama, Indian classical music, Ayurveda nutrition and therapies, and Sanskrit in both India and the U.S. over the last 16 years. She received her teaching certification through High Desert Yoga and has studied for several years with teachers in Rishikesh, Jaganath Puri, Pondicheri, and Mysore, India. Her teaching is inspired by the alignment of Iyengar, the organic and authentic explorations of Angela Farmer, Self-awareness, and Aloha.

Mark Lilly

Trauma-Informed Yoga Training: Core Level Training

High Desert Yoga | 4600 Copper Avenue NE

Training Description

Our Core Training offers an inspiring and heartfelt introduction to the field of service yoga for youth experiencing life challenges. The densely packed 14-hour training focuses on a wide variety of practical, hands-on skills needed to serve youth with yoga and meditation in the real world. Areas for exploration and practice include communicating effectively, maintaining safety in the classroom, promoting healthy boundaries, choosing postures and exercises, handling challenging behaviors and situations, and collaborating with agencies.

Training Activities

Each day of training includes learning by doing, seeing, and listening through the following:
Yoga practice
Breathing exercises & meditation
Sample scenarios and group problem-solving
Short lecture-style sessions with Q & A
Break-out small group sessions
Role playing and skills practice
Student teaching and feedback opportunities

Street Yoga recognizes the extremely diverse ways in which people practice and teach their yoga. Just as we see the unique traits that make each youth different, we also recognize that each trainee has a distinct relationship with yoga and his or her own individual preferences and beliefs about how to practice. Because of this, Street Yoga does not promote a single methodology for bringing yoga to youth and does not supply trainees with ready-made lists of postures or sequences. Instead, we encourage our trainees to explore how to teach what they already know in a heartfelt and authentic way that will help them engage with youth.

Learning Objectives
We strive to build our trainees’ confidence as teachers, while also discussing ways to modify and adapt their teaching skills to better serve their target audience. Trainees will be encouraged to dig into their personal experience and motivation in order to draw out their courage and compassion as a teacher.  We welcome questions about trainees’ special interests or concerns and strive to make the training a rich learning environment.

Upon completion of the training participants will be able to:
Compare factors involved in teaching yoga in a nontraditional setting vs. a studio setting
Recognize the important role of body-based interventions in trauma recovery
Describe ways to creatively modify poses for various populations and situations
Demonstrate specific postures to address back care and core strength
Design a brief, population-specific yoga sequence using appropriate postures & breathing
Discuss potential behavioral challenges and strategies for dealing with them
Identify new tools or strategies for improved communication
Explain potential boundary issues with students and describe appropriate responses Recognize personal sources of support for doing this work
Discuss ways of effectively approaching and partnering with social service sites
Define their own next steps in this work

*All trainees also receive an in-depth, interactive workbook that supports the learning objectives, provides background material for the training, and offers take-home exercises and references for future use.

**This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and Yoga Alliance for 14 hours of Continuing Education Units*.

Prerequisites Applicants are not required to have completed a teacher-training program.  However, because our training helps trainees understand how to use and adapt what they already know for the purposes of yoga service, all applicants should have experience with yoga and/or meditation.  These hours may include any combination of personal practice, studio classes, and/or individual instruction. We suggest a minimum of 20 hours of yoga before applying.
